John
Petrucci's guitar work here is, most tasteful, and easily his least
flashy, but possibly his best. John Myung is a talented and humble bass
player. On "New Millenium" he uses a Chapman Stick, which shows how
diverse and talented he is.
Gotta say that this album still
kicks a-- after all these years! Dream Theater's latest album after the
"departure" of keyboardist Kevin Moore (not including their Change of
Seasons classic), this album was more "mainstream" than any other. Not
too many people enjoyed this one, and it's understandable too. But this
is one of the last albums that you can listen to the whole way through
without skipping tracks to get past the boring stuff.
Petrucci
and Portnoy really show of their best stuff here, with fluid solos and
complex rhythms. James strains his voice and gives probably his best
performance (much better than some of the junk he comes up with now).
And the bassist is the bassist; who really pays attention to them
except for other bass players
The musicianship on here is just
flat out incredible like on any other DT release. James LaBrie's vocals
are just amazing as always, and they just send chills down your spine.
John Petrucci's guitar riffs and solos are absolutely fantastic and jaw
dropping just like on any other DT release. This guy is no doubt a true
guitar virtuoso. John Myung's bass lines are just solid and hearable
throughout, and he even uses a Chapman Stick on the opening track "New
Millennium" which is pretty cool. Derek Sherinian's keyboardwork on
here is very immpressive and his solos are great too. True Derek may
not be as great as Kevin Moore or Jordan Rudess, but he's still
excellent nonetheless. And of course Mike Portnoy's drumming is great
as always, and he also does a solid job with the double bass as well.
This guy never loses a beat whatsoever.
